Verbs Vs Nouns in science writing

Verbs are 'spunky', while nouns are 'clunky'

Quoted from 'Writing in the sciences' (Coursera) by Kristin Sainani

Implication in writing - Verbs accelerate sentences, while nouns slow down sentences.

Example

Original: A recommendation was made by the institutional ethics committee for the sample size of the study to be revised.

Edited: The institutional ethics committee recommended a revised sample size.

The small change from 'recommendation' (clunky noun) to 'recommended' (spunky verb) improves the readability of the sentence.

Have you wondered what differentiates boring from interesting writing?

Maybe, it is the difference between 'clunky' and 'spunky'?
