Trouble-some twos: The case of Which Vs That

POINT TO REMEMBER #1

  • If the sentence makes sense and stands independently when you remove the part that you intend to put after which/that, use WHICH

  • If the sentence does not make sense without the part that you intend to put after which/that, use THAT

POINT TO REMEMBER #2

  • ๐—จ๐˜€๐—ฒ comma before WHICH

  • ๐——๐—ผ ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ use comma before THAT

e.g.

Instead of: SARS-CoV2 infects cells, ๐˜„๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ต express the ACE2 receptor.

Use: SARS-CoV2 infects cells ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜ express the ACE2 receptor.

The sentence preceding 'which' does not convey the intended message on its own, therefore, the later part of the sentence is required.
