Public engagement triangle

The Public Engagement Triangle is a framework developed by Lindsey Coulborne that reflects various possible goals of public engagement initiatives, and is a combination of three key purposes: to transmit, to receive, and to collaborate.

To transmit

  • Change the public perception

  • Raise awareness about particular matters

  • Educate or teach

  • Shape opinions

  • Disseminate research results

To receive

  • Participation in science festivals

  • Websites, blogposts

  • Social media platforms

  • TV, radio, podcast shows

  • Public presentations

To collaborate

  • Open space events

  • Dialogue with stakeholders

  • Patient panels

  • Scientific debates

  • Consensus workshops

  • Mediation

In the context of science communication, the public engagement triangle demonstrates that any endeavor for public engagement will probably fall somewhere in the middle of the three purposes.

The goal of any science communication initiative would be to fall near the transmit vertex of the public engagement triangle.
