Are there any rules for capitalizations in abbreviations?

Well, not really...

But, here are some useful tips to ensure consistency in your writing!

Capitalize only the first alphabet of abbreviations that are just shortened forms of words.
  • Ab - Antibody

  • Asn - Asparagine

Capitalize all the alphabets of abbreviations that represent the initials of the whole word.
  • HIV - Human Immunodeficiency Virus

  • DNA - Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid

Abbreviations meaning different things that can confuse the reader...

Asn - Aspargine

ASN - American Society of Nephrology

Consistency in writing is the key...more important than rules!
